Auburn, Nebraska: Missouri River Bluffs and Trophy Whitetail

Auburn is the Nemaha County seat with a population around 3,300, nestled among the rolling bluffs and timber of southeast Nebraska near the Missouri River. The town is within easy reach of Indian Cave State Park, one of the most scenic and wildlife-rich parks in the state. Where to Hunt

Indian Cave State Park is the premier public hunting area near Auburn. The park covers over 3,000 acres of rugged Missouri River bluff terrain with dense hardwood timber, steep ravines, and river-bottom flats. Whitetail hunting in the park is outstanding, with mature bucks using the thick timber and steep terrain to avoid pressure. The park allows hunting during designated seasons, and the rugged landscape rewards hunters who are willing to work the hills.

Nemaha County as a whole is trophy whitetail territory. The Missouri River bluffs and associated timber corridors run along the eastern edge of the county, creating miles of mature hardwood habitat. The agricultural fields between the timber belts provide food sources that keep deer in the area year-round. Bucks in the 150-plus class come out of this county with regularity.

Turkey hunting in the bluff timber is excellent, with birds roosting in the mature hardwoods along the river and feeding in the adjacent crop fields. Spring gobbler hunting in this terrain is challenging but rewarding.
